Why I hate cell phones?

In this wild, unpredictable world that modern society has thrust upon us, only one gadget anchors us amid the whirl of Wiis, Wikis and Wi-fi: the cellular phone. From its origins as the pineapple-sized "car phone" exclusive to power-suited 80's business executives to its current incarnation as camera/computer/life coach, the cell phone has gone from convenient utility to graven idol of instant gratification. Scores of modern social phenomena are directly attributable to cell phones including textual flirtation, Bluetooth use disguised as schizophrenia and the ringtone as a profound expression of personal identity.

I Hate Cell Spam - Here’s How to Send It Successfully

Tue Apr 15, 2008 at 7:16 am By Matt

I haven’t figured out how to turn off the ring tone specifically for text messages, but I can identify them.

A single BLING means don’t waste my finger flipping muscles - unless to give my phone the bird.

I just counted the last 100 messages on my China Mobile cell phone before leaving on a brief trip outside of China, and found that exactly 30 were not spam. So every time the cell phone BLINGs, there’s a 70 percent chance it’s spam.

That’s likely enough that I’ll let friends and colleagues call if they really need something.

That said, pernicious spam may soon have to scram.

Why I Hate Cell Phones

By Ben James

I often feel like I’m the last person in the world without a cell phone. And I like it.

Not because I’m sick of hearing them ring (although I am).

Not because cell phone ownership is an explosive trend, and I hate feeling pressured to conform to trends, although this is also true. (A USA Today story from April 27, 2004, by Jon Swartz, predicts that about 900 million cell phones will be sold in 2008.)

Not because of a recently released study by USC showing that people often use their wireless Internet connections in the bathroom, which has obvious and chilling implications for cell phone users.

Not because of the revulsion that joining the yammering hordes of self-absorbed New Yorkers polluting the air around them with the banal minutia of their lives should inspire in any reasonably considerate person.

My problem with cell phones is that they’ve forever altered one of the central tenets of a healthy, balanced life: free time.

Why You'll Hate Cell Phone Spam

By Mike Elgan
April 11, 2008

Advertisers are all atwitter over the prospect of bombarding your cell phone with advertising.

If you're already annoyed by mobile spam, as I am, you'll be disappointed to learn that the industry has barely even begun to exploit this amazing source of eyeballs.

One estimate suggests that your average consumer is already exposed to about 3,000 ads per day (New York City residents see about 5,000 per day). The problem with this figure, according to the advertising industry, is that it's way too low. They intend to fix the problem by adding lots of ads to your cell phone.

Consumer Reports Survey Discovers People Hate Cell Phone Companies

By Chris Walters

The next issue of Consumer Reports will contain the results of a nationwide customer satisfaction survey for the mobile phone industry. In a surprise to no one who actually has a mobile phone, the cellular industry is "among the lowest-rated services" for consumers, particularly because of termination fees, high prices, and confusing contracts.

For instance, a customer may call to report his phone isn't working. He uses the company's one-stop number and is routed to the phone desk. What the customer doesn't know is that the phone problem, in this case, is actually an Internet problem.

Hate Your Cell Phone No More

By: Chris Dannen

What if your wireless plan had no early termination charges, no bizarre overage fees, and no self-aggrandizing claims about coverage? Thanks to new legislation, this could be your carrier -- and every carrier -- by law. Do we need laws to get good service?
